If you're an attorney in South Florida considering new options, we'd love to speak with you.

Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff, the Cleveland-based Am Law 200 firm, announced on August 3 that it's opening a Miami office with a 21-lawyer real estate finance and structured finance team hired away from Reed Smith.

The details that matter: the group is led by Jodi Schwimmer, formerly global co-chair of Reed Smith's Financial Industry Group, and Randy Eckers, a real estate finance lawyer with more than 25 years in the space. They're joined by partners Michael Estreicher, AJ Sokoloff, and Amanda Rapp. The move takes Benesch's national real estate practice from 65 to 85 lawyers. The team's work is commercial real estate finance, secondary market transactions, securitization, and complex lending for banks, debt funds, and private equity firms.

What caught my attention is the language. Schwimmer says the firm has “an aggressive growth plan” for Miami because it is “not going to just be a satellite office.” Firm leadership says Miami will be “a significant location in downtown Miami very soon, in a Class A building built for growth.”

Here's my read: this is more evidence that the BigLaw migration into Miami isn't a wave, it's a structural shift. Firms aren't opening token offices anymore. They're lifting entire practice groups and planting flags with intent to scale. Real estate finance is a smart beachhead. Miami's development pipeline, capital markets activity, and Latin American money flows give that practice a deep well to draw from.

What it means for attorneys: if you're a real estate finance associate in Miami, or thinking about relocating here, your market just got more competitive in the best way. Another sophisticated platform, another bidder for your talent. Expect lateral movement in this space to pick up as Benesch staffs around its new core.

I'll be watching who they hire next. That's where the real signal is.

If you're a real estate finance attorney curious about where the Miami market is headed, I'm happy to talk it through confidentially. That's what I do all day.
